On a daily basis, we are overwhelmed at the rate at which the Corona virus keeps spreading rapidly. Nonetheless we are still to remain calm and adhere to all the precautionary measures authorized by our local government.
A number of us will ask why we should be doing these things when actually you have or have not been doing them before the rise of the Corona virus.
Here are some credible answers to frequently asked questions to why we are to heed to these preventive protocols especially during the days of this pandemic.
1. WHY SHOULD I WASH MY HANDS?
Good hand hygiene that is washing your hands with soap and under running water for at least 20 seconds kills germs- bacteria and viruses effectively and stop the spread of 80% of infections,preventing diseases. Our hands play an active role in collecting and dumping of germs when we cough or sneeze into them, touch surfaces, greet people by handshaking, touch pets,touch garbage etc. Frequent hand-washing becomes the one most important thing to do to maintain clean hands and break the chain of infection from one person to the other.
2. WHY SHOULD I USE AN ALCOHOL-BASED HAND RUB/SANITIZER?
Using a hand sanitizer with at least 60-70% of alcohol helps to quickly reduce the number of microbes in your hands helping you to avoid getting sick when you touch your eyes,nose or mouth and also prevent one from spreading germs to others. However, if your hands are visibly dirty, hand sanitizers may not work well. Remember that sanitizing your hands does not replace the importance of hand washing. Always wash your hands frequently when you can.
3.WHY SHOULD I AVOID TOUCHING MY EYES, NOSE AND MOUTH?
Our hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once they become contaminated, our hands can transfer the virus to the eyes,nose and mouth when we touch them,paving way for the virus to body, making one sick.
4.WHY SHOULD I AVOID HAND SHAKES?
Handshaking has over the years become one of the many ways to show affection and also regarded as a way of greeting in many countries. As our hands pick up germs from different sources and get contaminated, we are likely to transfer these germs from person to the other when we shake hands. Avoid shaking hands as much as possible. Stop the spread now.

A nose mask is a protective piece of material that covers ones mouth and nose. A healthy person wears a mask when they are around the sick or taking care of sick to prevent them from contracting the Corona virus when they sneeze or cough likewise patients wear masks to prevent them from transmitting the virus to others when they cough and sneeze. Wear a nose mask when you are coughing and sneezing. Avoid touching it, but when you do,wash hands or use an alcohol based hand rub. Replace mask with a new one as soon as it is damp. CDC recommends that people wear masks in public settings where social distancing measures can be difficult to maintain.
7. WHY SHOULD I PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING?
Social distancing is a way to ensure that people do not stand or sit close to each other especially in areas or settings where there are many people. Being at least 2m to 6ft apart ensures that droplets produced while coughing and sneezing does not reach other persons within this range. Social distancing should be practiced by everyone whether or not exposed to the virus.
8. WHY SHOULD I STAY AT HOME?
Staying at home to keep people safe can be a difficult concept to grasp, especially when you are feeling fit and healthy yourself. Governments around the world are encouraging people to stay at home to protect health services and save lives.
Groups and communities are separated and have restricted movement. Among the new measures brought in the Ghana, people can only leave their homes to buy food, medicine and to exercise. They're allowed to travel, but only to and from work if they cannot do their jobs from home. This is mainly to prevent potential exposure to the Corona virus outside their homes. Stay home, don't go out there if your life doesn't depend on it!
9. WHY SHOULD I SEEK MEDICAL CARE WHEN I AM SICK?
If you experiencing flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough and sneeze or feeling sick,you should probably seek immediate medical care to prevent the unintended spread of the virus and also prevent further complications. Immediate care can help reduce the risk of potential damage. One can also practice self-isolation when sick.
